    Subungual hematoma: Causes, symptoms, treatment

Subungual hematoma, also known as a “black nail,” refers to a condition characterized by bleeding and accumulation of blood under the nail bed. It commonly occurs as a result of trauma or injury to the nail. Here are some key points regarding the causes, symptoms, and treatment of subungual hematoma:

    Causes:

The most common cause of subungual hematoma is direct trauma or injury to the nail. This can happen due to a sudden impact or crushing force on the finger or toe, such as slamming it in a door or dropping a heavy object on it.

    Symptoms:

    • Discoloration: One of the primary symptoms of subungual hematoma is the appearance of a dark or blackish discoloration under the nail. The blood trapped beneath the nail gives it a bruised or “blackened” appearance.

    • Pain and Tenderness: The affected area may be painful and tender to touch, especially when pressure is applied.

    • Swelling: Subungual hematoma can cause localized swelling around the nail bed.

    • Throbbing Sensation: Some individuals may experience a throbbing sensation or pulsating pain in the affected area.

    • Restricted Nail Growth: As the hematoma persists, it can hinder normal nail growth and cause nail deformities if left untreated.

If you are experiencing these symptoms you can consult a Skin Specialist in Islamabad.

    Treatment:

    • Ice Application: Applying ice wrapped in a cloth or using a cold compress on the affected area can help reduce swelling and alleviate pain.

    • Elevation: Elevating the injured finger or toe can help reduce swelling and promote blood flow.

    • Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can be taken to manage pain and discomfort.

    • Drainage: For significant pain or pressure relief, a healthcare professional may consider draining the accumulated blood by creating a small hole in the nail. This procedure is typically performed using a heated sterilized needle or cautery device.

    • Nail Decompression: In some cases, the healthcare professional may choose to remove a portion of the nail to relieve pressure and facilitate drainage. This procedure is typically done using local anesthesia.

    • Antibiotics: If there is concern about infection or if the injury is severe, oral antibiotics may be prescribed.

    • Nail Care: Proper nail care during the healing process includes keeping the area clean, applying an antibiotic ointment, and protecting it from further injury.

It is important to note that if the injury is severe, there is a high degree of pain, or if there are signs of a more serious injury, such as a fracture or open wound, it is recommended to seek medical attention promptly. The Best Dermatologist in Lahore can assess the extent of the injury and provide appropriate treatment and care to prevent complications.
